Spanish influenza
The Spanish Influenza was a very deadly virus that affected over 500 million people around the world. The Spanish flu killed around three to five percent of the world's population or approximately fifty to one hundred million people. It made the virus one of the deadliest in history.
Richland County was no exception. Richland County, Montana issued a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the virus. It prohibited the serving of anything including ice cream, milk, and even soft drinks. The people with symptoms of the virus were told that they must stay home to keep others from getting exposed to the virus.
George Nichols was a soldier from Savage, MT. He was the son of Mary Baker Nichols and William Nichols. George was born in South Dakota in 1897 and moved to Savage when he was 19. George was off to Missoula, MT on August 14th, where he would enroll in training to protect and serve his country. He became ill with the flu before he departed. George never got the chance to go to Europe and fight for his country. George Nichols of Savage, MT died Tuesday, October 14, 1918 at the age of 21 in a Missouri hospital of influenza. His remains were sent to his home, where the family was to collect them. George is buried in the Riverview Cemetery in Savage, MT.
